As a non-profit, volunteer-run station with no ad revenue and no government funding, we rely entirely on the generosity of our listeners. Global Irish Radio is home away from home for the many Irish folks who comprise the Irish Diaspora.  Their story is a familiar one.  They left the homeland in search of opportunities and a better life.   With them, they brought their love of their music, heritage and culture.  They shared it in song and story on Irish programs that sprouted up in Irish strongholds around the globe.   As times have changed and technology too, Global Irish Radio seeks to continue the tradition of sharing our music, heritage and culture by creating a platform for the future.

I recently read an interesting article from an American newspaper on the demise of AM radio - it's sad but it's true.  Technological developments have rendered it obsolete.   US automakers set to discontinue AM radio on newer car models  - even as a bipartisan group rally to oppose arguing it is very much the backbone of the US emergency alert system.   Probably true, but if the digital infrastructure is wiped out, it's very likely that your AM transistor radio is melting in your hands..  Just look at some of the compelling digital  over AM  arguments - listed above.  The picture is taken from the article to which I was referring.

Global Irish Radio launched in February 2021 with a mission to preserve and promote Irish music, heritage and culture around the globe by uniting the global Irish radio community and bringing many of these great programs together on a single platform. It’s based on the premise ‘there’s strength in unity” - one for all and all together. It is in essence, Irish radio by the diaspora, for the diaspora. It ultimately seeks to strengthen the bond between Ireland and her diaspora.Less than 6 months later, Global Irish Radio has close to 20 weekly Irish radio progams from Irish communities around the globe and many more in the pipeline. All this has been made possible thanks to the generosity of the many wonderful people involved – people with a shared vision and a mission to preserve and promote all things Irish wherever they go.

People who are driven by a love of their Irish heritage and the music and content they share with a global Irish loving audience – and whose only reward is the satisfaction derived from sharing it with others.

Global Irish Radio is delighted at the news that Maryann McTeague Keifer and Sharon Smith Iberle have teamed up to present a wonderful new program on GIR featuring top shelf trad and trad derived tunes.   Both are seasoned presenters of trad programs with their fingers on the pulse of the trad scene!   Listeners are in for a real treat and it's an exciting addition to the schedule that allows GIR to showcase the very best in traditional Irish music.   Stay tuned for other exciting news on upcoming announcements and new program additions to the GIR schedule.  

Very Excited about the upcoming launch of Global Irish Radio - A Streaming Platform bursting with Irish content - from all parts of the Global Irish Diaspora - Eventually!  

Global Irish Radio will feature lots of Irish Music Programming to start - along with a nice selection of shows from Chicago and Ireland.  Then, gradually, we hope to expand the schedule to include programs from other cities and countries where there are strong and vibrant Irish communities.

In addition to those community driven programs we hope to be a creative well for talented individuals from all areas of Irish life -  music, heritage and culture as well as public service type programs geared towards enriching the lives of many across the globe.  So, if you're a musician, a poet, a writer, commentator, sports enthusiast or someone with a message to share, or looking to connect with a global Irish or Irish loving audience, then Global Irish Radio is the perfect platform for you!
